The Transatlantic Tea 40
Starmer Resignation Edition
I am sure my British readers are drowning in Starmer news, so I’ll keep it short, and prioritise references to Hot Podium Guy and other headline news…
CNN has an entire video dedicated to Hot Podium Guy.
NYT has lots of pieces outlining what happened and the process from here - but also a piece specifically looking at the ‘benign market reaction.’ on Monday and suggesting Burnham had managed to reassure investors - with all eyes now on who is chancellor.
NPR lead with the resignation meaning the 7th British PM in 10 years - commentators in the piece link this to Brexit and ‘public support for far-right parties, he said, including the upstart anti-immigrant Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, an on-again, off-again friend of President Trump.’
Axios links the resignation to Mandelson and welfare cuts.
USA Today have a detailed piece, saying Starmer had a rocky relationship with Trump and that, in their view, “Burnham, if he wins, is not likely to make significant changes to Britain's domestic or international policies. He is cut from the same broad political cloth as Starmer, though he is viewed as more left-leaning than Starmer.”
Washington Examiner have a brutal opener in their piece ‘British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is resigning from office, the culmination of months of scandal and ineffectiveness as his government failed to solve a series of crises gripping the United Kingdom.’ - with Starmer a trending topic on their front page.
And finally, Breitbart leads their entire site with Burnham - piece is worth reading in full, with a focus on criticism of Burnham: ‘The liberal legacy media was also quick to fawn over the supposed political saviour, with the BBC even chartering a helicopter simply to cover his train journey from Manchester to London with bated breath.’ And a suggestion at the end of the piece that he may call a snap election to gain his own mandate.
I may write The Transatlantic Tea, but I won’t say no to a coffee.
If you’re enjoying the read, buy me a coffee to keep the content brewing
