The Transatlantic Tea 29
From Fox to NYT to Semafor: Everyone pulled up a pew to watch the UK meltdown
I understand it’s been a busy news week in Britain? We may not have followed every twist and turn Stateside but I think America gets the gist.
The British Government
Wasn’t really sure how to headline this section…. but we kicked off on Sunday with an NYT news alert on McSweeney’s resignation under the headline ‘Epstein fallout in Britain’ (the only resignation to get such an alert.) 7pm every weekday, NYT summarises the top 3 news stories in one alert - can’t remember ever seeing British domestic news here before:
Monday afternoon DC Playbook reported on Tim Allan standing down and “the call from Anas Sarwar (for Starmer) to step away from his post.” WSJ also reported on Monday that “Starmer is hanging to power by a thread. Most analysts say it is a question of when not if he departs. That would put Britain on course for its fifth leader in seven years, an unsettling prospect for business and investors.” Fox also covers.
Breitbart describes McSweeney as a ‘sacrificial lamb’ and an ‘Anti-Breitbart activist’ in a composite story of the week, with Allan’s resignation as the headline. NPR also has extensive coverage of the week, including an interview with Luce from the FT covering “Why the Epstein fallout seem to be greater in the UK”. Semafor ran the story in its flagship newsletter, quoting Beth Rigby saying “London is engulfed in a tinderbox atmosphere”
Best of the rest:
I think everyone might have had enough news this week so I’ll keep this light - but here’s a couple of extras:
WSJ reports on UK GDP, describing 2025 as “another year of tempered economic growth”
CNN covers Jim Radcliffe’s comments about immigration in Britain under the headline Billionaire Manchester United co-owner sparks outrage by claiming UK ‘colonized by immigrants – can only assume Man U more recognisable in the US than Ineos
I may write The Transatlantic Tea, but I won’t say no to a coffee.
If you’re enjoying the read, buy me a coffee to keep the content brewing
